Zelo Brazilian Keratin Smoothing System on Natural African American Hair

IMAGE 1

I am absolutely IN LOVE with this product!! I tried this for the first time almost 4 weeks ago. I have naturally kinky/curly hair that is extremely thick and hard to manage. Zelo gave me beautiful straightened hair and made my hair softer and more manageable without permanently changing my curl pattern. Over the past 4 weeks I have enjoyed wearing my hair both straight AND curly with this treatment in!! I was able to wear my hair straight for over a week without having to retouch with the flat iron at all until I washed it again. This product does exactly what it says, I am ordering another batch today, and telling all of my friends about it!!  – Charlesa

I don’t brag about anything I haven’t tried myself, and I am so happy I decided to give this product a chance!! -Charlesa

More pictures of my hair after using this product. This was the next day after treatment. Hair was super SHINY and SILKY with NO PRODUCT ADDED!! I got so many compliments. Again I am 100% natural. I think my hair looks better with this treatment in it than it ever did with a perm!! I am not a beautician but I take very good care of my hair and I did this treatment at home myself. Sooo easy!! – Charlesa

Does Castor Oil Make Your Hair Grow Faster?

Beauty Myths: Does Castor Oil Make your hair grow

Castor Oil, which comes from castor beans, otherwise known as an over-the-counter laxative, is now a hair product many women can’t live without.

The Myth:

If you’ve ever heard the term “Castor Oil Challenge” then you’ve probably heard something along the lines of: Castor oil makes your hair thicker/longer/stronger, etc.

Castor oil is used as a hair and scalp moisturizer. It comes in two popular forms: dark tinted black and yellow colored. Black castor oil or “Jamaican Black Castor Oil” is typically thought to be the strongest, and more natural form.

Black Castor Oil vs. Yellow Castor Oil

Black castor oil is actually the least pure form of castor oil. Yellow castor oil is typically cold pressed, which means it is extracted from the castor bean without heat, keeping most of its natural properties in tact. Black castor oil comes from heating & cooking the castor beans then mixing in other additives to give it the dark color. So, it’s safe to say that you’re getting less of the natural benefits to your hair with black castor oil.

The Science

Natural castor oil is rich in vitamin E and fatty acids. It also has anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties. However, there is no real scientific evidence suggesting that castor oil actually thickens the hair strand or makes it grow faster.

The Verdict

Weeeeeeeeell…For women suffering with Alopecia caused by traction and scarring in the scalp, applying castor oil directly on the scalp can help reduce the inflammation there, which may contribute to promoting growth and thickening the weakened strands. Maybe.

Otherwise, the answer is no. Applying castor oil to your hair will not affect the rate your hair grows or make your hair any thicker. Castor oil can make your locks shinier, more moisturized and stronger, since moisture protects the hair from the elements.

So why does it seem as if everyone and their mother using castor oil is getting longer hair faster? Chances are the same people who who use castor oil for hair growth are just likely to be doing everything right to optimize their hair growth. Everything right means: eating healthy and getting vitamins, moisturizing, using sulfate-free shampoos to prevent moisture/nutrient loss, and getting plenty of sleep and exercise.

The Afro Trend- Celebrating Natural Hair (Book) By Michael July!

A beautiful celebration of natural hair by photographer and author Michael July. These beautiful afros are an inspiration; no more relaxers or harsh chemicals. Zelo encourages healthy natural hair, giving you the power to choose between full curls, and on a day where you want less volume, smooth hair. So enjoy your natural hair! Nurture it, care for it, and respect it.

Zelo’s note: If you love natural hair, check out the book Afros: A Celebration of Natural Hair by Michael.

Finding the right products can be tough, many brands with endless and complicated ingredient lists that we can’t even understand. So how do you know what to look for? For starters, you always want to go for a Salt and Sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. Salt and Sulfate free hair products are less damaging to your hair, they don’t dry your hair out or strip your color like regular shampoos. You can find Zelo’s Salt and Sulfate free shampoo and conditioner on our website here http://ow.ly/mNVCT.

Another great tip, is to use a thermo protector on your hair. Your skin isn’t the only part of your body that needs protection from the summer heat and UV rays. The Velvet Gloss is a great buy that not only protects your hair from harmful UV rays, but also shines, detangles, and prevents split ends. Dreaming of natural hair? Check out all the natural hair below and get inspired!

Zelo Keratin and African American Hair

Zelo Keratin On Natural “Black Hair” Before and After Results

Since Zelo’s airing on HSN this monday, ladies of color have been asking us one thing: “That girl doing her Happy Dance and whipping her hair back and forth, how do I get that?”

No doubt, keratin has been one of the best kept secrets for African American hair, and with that comes a lot of questions. Is it like a relaxer? Is it permanent? What will it do for my natural, afro, relaxed, mixed, curly, or kinky texture?  As an African American myself who is transitioning from relaxed to natural and also has about 5 different textures of hair on her head (lol), I’m going to do my best to address these question/concerns right now.
