A Hint of 40′s Vintage Glam

40's Hair Tutorial

1940′s hair is all about sculpted waves and coiffed curls. Hollywood stars like Veronica Lake, famous for her signature polished waves and deep side part, always looked as if hurricane winds couldn’t blow a single curl out of place.

Taking some notes from the 40′s, I decided to show you guys a simple, everyday look that channels old Hollywood glam.

Three beauty tools you need for achieving this look are: A traditional clip-curling iron, MOUSE/hairspray, bobby pins, and hair gloss to polish it off.

Start by curling the ends of your hair in sections. Don’t just curl the very ends; curl the short layers as well ( this is where the hairspray comes in. You want the curls to look a bit stiff and very defined). Do a side part and (using mouse) brush it sleekly to the side above your forehead. Press your pointer to above your temple and wrap about an inch of hair around it 2-3 times–take your finger out and pin your hair in place. From there just brush your curls out slightly and polish the look off with gloss.

Voila! If you don’t look like a 40′s movie star, you’ll at least look like a 40′s chorus girl, for sure!

3 60′s Hairstyles to Try This Spring (With Tutorials)

Break out the hairspray because 60′s hairdos have been a big trend on the red carpet and on the runway this year. Whether it’s messy volume or elegant sleek, I can’t get enough of these retro styles. Here are just a few of my favorite 60′s looks that are easy to do.

1. The Beehive

I’ve always been fascinated with this gravity defying updo and I’m making a prediction that it will be quite the trend this Spring. For a proper towering beehive, you’ll need more than just than a little backcombing. Our favorite hive filler is actually a bath loofa!

Here’s a step-by-step from A Beautiful Mess

2. The Bob With Bangs

Dianna Agron, Miley Cyrus, and Katy Perry are just a few celebs sporting bobs this year. If you’re like me and you’re not ready to commit to a haircut, you can always try this faux bob tutorial by our favorite hair blogger, Hair Romance.

Collette’s bangs are the easiest bangs to cut yourself. No need for a salon!

The trick to cutting these bowl-shaped bangs: is to section out a portion of hair for your bangs and comb it flat across your forehead (don’t bunch it all in the center).

Step 1: Depending on whether you’re left or right handed, clip the hair between your index and middle finger (you index finger should be flat against your forhead), and twist it 90 degrees (in the opposite direction of your hand) so that you’re now pointing to your forehead with both fingers. Hold the hair tightly and switch hands, keeping the hair in the same position. Now that you’ve got your hair in your other hand (index and pointer pointing to forhead), twist your hair in the same direction another 90 degrees. (Now your other index finger is against your forhead.

Step 2: Comb the ends of your hair so it’s flat and not bunched up at the center. Hold your hair tightly in your fingers and use the other hand to trim the hair in a solid straight line across. For Collette’s length you need to trim right underneath your brows. When you release your hair and comb it out you’ll have perfectly shaped bowl cut bangs that are shorter at the forehead and longer at the sides.

3. The Bump

Just when you though you’ve seen the last of Bumpits! While Snookie may have traded her infamous bump for a baby bump, big, voluminous hair is making a huge comeback. Backcombing can be a great tool when you already have thick hair but for girls with fine hair, there are tons of faux bumps, clips, and other styling tools available in your cosmetic store.

Here’s a quick, easy-to-do, tutorial to get that 60′s voluminous look. Cat eyeliner not included. :)

Now get to it before the trend’s over and you have to wait for the next 60′s revival! (lol)

Peace. Love. Zelo.

Top 5 Screen Villainess Hairstyles

Everyone knows female villains have the most glam appeal. We love them, but we love their sultry, dangerous, and sometimes flamboyant style even more. In honor of award season, let’s give out fictional awards to the top 5 villain hairstyles on screen.

5. Regina George Mean Girls (2004)

Rachel MacAdams has got to be the most lovable brunette since Sandra Bullock. But, before she was sweet, she was the tart, queen bee in Mean Girls. Her pin-straight, blonde hair and calculating stare gave us chills, but we couldn’t help but envy her. Who doesn’t love quoting all her Regina-isms?

4. Cat Woman Batman (1967-68)

Cross breed a Snookie bump with a french braid and add in some kitten ears and you have the purrrfect deviant hairdo, Eartha Kitt rocked this voluminous do in the late 60′s as Catwoman, making her one of the sexiest screen villians to date! Anne Hathaway sure has some big paws to fill.

3. May Day in James Bond: A View to a Kill (1985)

If her character hadn’t had a change of heart and reformed her bad girl ways, Grace Jones’ May Day would be #1 on this list. Her androgynous high-top fade and loud fashion was the pique of 80′s dopeness. Singers like Janelle Monae and Rihanna are just of few of many who have borrowed her oh so sexy yet tomboyish hairstyle.

2. Nefretiri in The Ten Commandments (I956)

Nefretiri in The Ten Commandments

Years before Elizabeth Taylor donned that iconic bob and bang, Anne Baxter perfected it, playing Nefretiri, the “O.G.” of female villainy. Not only is she the original femme fetale, her stunning signature short cut bangs and bob are one of the most memorable hairdos in film.

1. Cruella Devile 101 Dalmatians (1961)

Cruella

Say what you will about her, but Cruella Devile had STYLE. With her over-the-top glam and her PETA-worthy obsession with fur, she’s definitely a formidable Disney foe. Her half salt, half pepper hairdo remains of the most iconic villain hairstyles to date.
